A great gig with STING

April 10th, 2013 I played at the “We Are Family” celebration of STING and Trudy Styler for their humanitarian work.

I shared the stage with STING, Nile Rodgers and Sam Moore (Of Sam and Dave). A fantastic, joyful experience. Hopefully STING will call me for more gigs in the near future.

BRAZIL TOUR 2012

The Brazilian tour was a great success. We played in six gigs in towns and cities throughout Parana state. The music was composed and arranged by the amazing Andre Dequech. The band consisted of bass trombone, two tenor trombones, French horn, trumpet, flute/piccolo, oboe/English horn, clarinet/bass clarinet, cello and bassoon, plus rhythm section of bass drums and piano.... and me!

After the tour, I went to Belo Horizonte, the home of musical giants like Tonino Horta, Milton Nascimiento, Hermeto Paschoal, Egberto Gismonte and others.

Andre and I went to the studio and laid down eight basic tracks for a CD that we hope to release in February. The CD will include the legendary Tonino Horta on guitar and Nenem on drums. I’m very excited about this.

Andre Dequech

New Book of Will Galison Jazz solos to be released by Hal Leonard this Spring.

Hal Leonard Publishing has commissioned me to make a book/ CD of jazz solos for chromatic harmonica. The eight solos, on standard jazz tunes are played over fine Play-Along tracks that Hal Leonard has produced. Ironically, this may be the closest thing to a “straight ahead” jazz album that I have made, even though the interplay is only one -way on these tracks, i believe they sound very organic, and I’m pleased with the collection as an example of my jazz playing as well as an instructional tool. I had a lot of fun doing this and look forward to making many similar collections on the future.
Three of the tunes from the album can be heard here

Playing with incredible drummers at the Underground Monday night gigs

I have been honored to play with some of the most celebrated drummers in pop music at my Monday night gigs. Our regular drummer is Eric Halvorson, who is one of the most versatile and musical drummers on the NY scene. When Eric is unable to make it, we use guest drummers. In recent weeks we have had the honor of playing with Dennis Davis and Chris Parker, two drummers who have played on some of my all time favorite albums.

For example: Dennis played on Stevie Wonder’s “Hotter than July” and “Secret life of Plants” and every David Bowie record from “Young Americans” to “Scary Monsters”.

Chris recorded on HUNDREDS of albums, for artists like Bonie Raitt, James Taylor, James Brown, Stuff, Paul Simon.

And now these cats are playing with ME! How cool is that?

New Songs

I’ve been writing new songs and making demos on my home studio.

A couple of new ones are Offa the Grid and You Still Can’t Dance

But stay tuned for a whole lot more.

Recorded on Donald Fagen’s New Album

I’ve been a huge fan of Steely Dan since I tried playing the guitar solo from “Reeling in the Years” in my high school band. They are in highest the level of my appreciation along with the Beatles, The Stones and Stevie Wonder.

So I was excited to get a call a couple of weeks ago from Michael Leonhart, who was producing Donald Fagen’s new album. The two tracks I played are classic Steely Dan, and I think they are both great examples of Don’s writing. Don was as down to earth and personable as could be, and the whole session was a ball, though I confess I was a little star struck.

The album will be coming out in the fall, after the Steely Dan world Tour takes a break.

Home Recording

I’ve been doing a lot of recording tracks for other people’s projects.
